The Rape of the Samburu Women
When Kenya was still a British colony the women in this area faced an epidemic of rape. Even though these rapes were officially claimed, the Royal Military Police cleared all soldiers from wrongdoing. In the mid-1990s, Beatrice Chili responded to this situation by establishing the village of Senchen, a self-sufficient community run entirely by women. There, women build homes, weave textiles, gather and grow food, and raise children. This short film visits the brave women of Senchen, who speak candidly about their suffering and talk passionately about their demands for justice.
Iara Lee was born and raised in Brazil by Korean parents. Her career in film began as producer and programmer of the Sao Paulo International Film Festival, a tenure that lasted from 1984 to 1989. From there, Iara relocated to New York city to launch a film production company, Caipirinha Productions. She is the founder of the Cultures of Resistance Network, an organization that promotes global solidarity, supports peace with justice projects and brings together artists and changemakers from around the world.
